Happy New Year

Dear Sisters,

As we begin a new year, let us take what we have learned and what we need to learn and look ahead, as we remember that faith is always pointed toward the future. We are daughters of God chosen to come to the earth at this time which has been called "a very difficult season in the history of the world". When we turn to Heavenly Father and seek His wisdom in knowing the things that matter most, we strengthen our faith and open our hearts to the influence of the Holy Ghost.

The Lord in His wisdom has provided a Relief Society to help His daughters. He established this divine organization through the prophet Joseph Smith in 1842 to align His daughters with His work and to enlist their help in building His kingdom and strengthening homes that they may be a refuge and a defense against the spiritual distractions in the world.

This year our Doylestown Relief Society will focus on Sister Julie Beck's inspiring charge to prepare ourselves and our families for the blessings eternal life by increasing in faith and personal righteousness, strengthening families and homes, and seeking to be like the Savior and helping others in need.

"Life is not calm for most women, each day seems to require the accomplishment of a million things, most of which are important." Knowing how to prioritize correctly and to give our time and efforts to the "essentials" things that draw us close to the Spirit and help build a firm foundation of truth and light are key to our spiritual preparation.

This year in Relief Society, we will be learning about the history of Relief Society and how it helps teach us WHO we are and WHAT we are to do. All our lessons, activities, and ministering in visiting teaching this year will center on 6 keys areas that will help us to seek for the "essential" things in life that will help spiritually prepare ourselves and our families:

1- Personal and family prayer

2- Feasting upon the holy scriptures

3- Seeking, recognizing, and following the Spirit

4- Making and keeping covenants

5- Worshipping in the holy temple

6- Ministering like the Savior

We express our deep love and gratitude for each of you. From Relief Society, sisters go forth to serve in various capacities in Primary, Young Women, Sunday School, and in the community. You are each a beacon of light and virtue. Through the sacred work of the Relief Society, we are all connected in sisterhood and share in a noble heritage and can develop faith like those remarkable and faithful women that have gone before us. As a daughter of God, each of us has a vital role in helping to build the kingdom of God and preparing ourselves and our families for the blessings of eternal life.

Love,

The Doylestown Relief Society Presidency

Manhattan Temple Trip

Look at this lovely group of ladies standing in front of the Manhattan Temple! We had a wonderful time attending the temple together in January and really felt the Spirit as we got to know each other better, helped each other with family names and enjoyed the peace the temple brings. We look forward to many other opportunities this year. Our next trip is scheduled for March 5th going to the Washington DC temple and leaving a little later in the morning. We will be getting more details out soon!

Turkey Box Service Day

What a beautiful group of ladies we had turn out to lend a hand in making Turkey Boxes at our Bring a Friend Service Day. We were able to decorate and fill 26 boxes!!! This will bless the lives of 26 families. Cherry B. Silver said "As members of this worldwide organization called Relief Society, our mission is clear. In all our diversity we combine our strengths to bless each other and to do the work of the Lord." And that was just what we did. We came together and got it done. As a Relief Society presidency, we have felt strongly about getting back to one of the basic principles that Relief Society was started for: service. Look for many opportunities to pull together and serve in the new year. Levi Edgar Young said "The members of the Relief Society of the church go among the people who suffer in their feelings; who need the blessings of human helpfulness; who crave for some loving word in time of death; who hunger for some blessings in days of sorrow. They are messengers of happiness to the oppressed and the needy. They show mercy. They love mercy. It is their action of love and charity that brings the most subtle and tingling sense of happiness that can be felt by any human being. It is a conduct of life built up by faith and a feeling of joy which comes from service to mankind." I hope that we can continue to experience more of the joy that we all felt today as we gathered together to serve not just those in need, but also the Lord. We are His instruments in ministering to those in need.

Relief Society Food Collection

"Gift of Life Family House"

In honor of our beloved Timmy Raymond, the Relief Society is collecting non-perishable FOOD ITEMS for the Gift of Life Family House Pantry.

Please drop off food items in the COLLECTION BOXES in the foyer of the chapel. Thank you for your generous contributions!

-----------------------------------------------------

Timmy Raymond, seventh-grader at Unami Middle School, loved sports, music, and building. In fact, Timmy loved constructing just about anything he could get to hold together, and dreamed of one day becoming an architect. He was well known by friends and family as an exceptionally smart, thoughtful, hard-working, and kind-hearted young man.

Timmy fought a vicious illness with determination and courage for four months surviving unfathomable procedures many used for the first time in medical history. Although he did finally receive a lung transplant and lived through a 12-hour surgery, he died a short time later on March 6, 2010.

The Gift of Life Family House seeks to ease the burden of families whose loved ones are undergoing organ transplants in the Philadelphia region, by providing resources for them, such as meals, counseling, and transportation. Thousands of patients come to Philadelphia hospitals every year needing life-saving organ transplants. Many come from out of state or travel great distances. Family House is a refuge for patients and their families who are on this journey.

Temple Trip

Dear Sisters,

I express my sincere thanks to you for your efforts and active participation in the Relief Society "100 Day Book of Mormon Reading Challenge" which culminated in being together in the temple on Saturday Oct 9. It was a beautiful day. I know there were many who would have liked to attend but could not due to schedules, sickness, etc. You were thought of and missed. We will have more temple trips scheduled throughout the coming months.

President Benson said there are 3 reasons to make the Book of Mormon a lifelong pursuit: 1) it is the keystone of our religion 2) it is written for our day 3) it will help us draw nearer to God.

I urge each of us to study the scriptures and words of our living prophets, ponder the teachings and apply them to our lives. As we do so, we prepare ourselves to make covenants with the Lord. The temple is the house of the Lord. It is a holy place where we participate in saving ordinances and where we can find peace and feel the sanctifying influence of the Spirit of the Lord which will teach us, comfort us, and help us through our trials and challenges of our lives.

Love, Jen Pond

October 21, 2010 @ 7pm

Please come join us for a casual and inspiring evening on how to spiritually strengthen ourselves and our families. The first class will be a book discussion based on the book Mothering With Spiritual Power by Debra Woods. It is an eloquent and heartfelt book that speaks to mothers of the sacred nature of motherhood and the awesome spiritual power available to them through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Please sign-up on the google doc and let us know if you are interested in ordering a book. You DO NOT need to read the book to attend the class. Please come and enjoy the strength that comes from sisterhood as we learn together how to develop meaningful connections with our children, to foster an home atmosphere of respect, peace and harmony, to turn weaknesses into strengths, to forgive ourselves and others, and how to help support one another.

100
Day "Drawing Nearer to Christ" Book of Mormon Reading Challenge

There is a book we need to study daily, both as individuals and as family, namely the Book of Mormon. I love that book. It is the book that will get a person nearer to God by

abiding by its precepts than any other book. Let us continually reread the Book of Mormon so that we might more fully come to Christ, be committed to Him, centered in Him, and consumed in Him.” President Ezra Taft Benson

We welcome all Relief Society sisters to participate in our Relief Society 100 Day "Drawing Nearer to Christ" Book of Mormon Reading Challenge. We will culminate this 100 day reading challenge with a temple trip on Saturday, October 9, 2010. This activity is optional of course but highly encouraged.

As we study and ponder the words of God contained in the scriptures, we can receive more spiritual discernment and inspiration for ourselves and for our families.

Wherever we may be at this time in our lives, we can take the Lord's hand that is always stretched out in love and mercy. You are important. You are a daughter of God. We are on the same path together. God requires of us to do our best- to have faith, to follow Him by helping each other- not because it is our duty but because we do it out of love. When we feel the love of God in our lives, we can more fully love those around us and we become strong in the unity of a great sisterhood.

Family History

Thank you Nancy Hopkins for the wonderful Relief Society class which gave us an overview of the new Family Search program- "The Sandbox".

If you would like to receive more individual instruction on how to generate Family Ordinance Request sheets to take to the temple in order to perform ordinance work for deceased family members, please contact the Relief Society Presidency.

"As we learn to be loving, caring families in mortality, our hearts will naturally turn to members of our kindred family in the spirit world. As they continue to live beyond the veil, they wait — they wait for us, their family, to share the blessings of the ordinances of the priesthood. They yearn to belong to the eternal family circle. They are anxious for us to make this possible." Elder J. Richard Clark
